Have you ever found yourself advancing the cutting tool on a lathe, or moving the column on a vertical mill, and you have forgotten how many turns of the wheel you have made? To parody Dirty Harry, "Have I turned this handwheel twenty-one times, or only twenty? In all this boredom I kind of lost track myself.... [Y]ou've got to ask yourself one question. Do I feel lucky?"

This ruler simplifies the process. It is thin enough to fit on the Sherline's lathe bed under the saddle, or on the vertical column of the Sherline vertical mill. If you look at where the saddle was when you started, you can immediately see how far you have moved the saddle. The ruler has .050" divisions on it, and that is sufficient for coarse measurements; the handwheels are for the finer divisions.

Especially for the very tedious operations that involve moving more than an inch, this can make your life a bit more pleasant; I know that it has often been an advantage for me. Double-sided tape holds it in place, but this is not the permanent double-sided tape, so it should not be a problem to remove without making a mess. Because this is printed on photo paper, you can cut it to the size of your Sherline lathe bed or vertical column.

Precision Rulers For Cutoff Saws

Would you like to cut materials with precision? These semidisposable rulers make it easy to consistently cut materials within .050". In this example, a block at 2.86" provides a stop so that you can quickly and easily cut piece after piece with considerable accuracy.

Double-sided tape holds the two rulers in place, but this is not the permanent double-sided tape, so it should not be a problem to remove without making a mess. The rulers are 1.25" high, so they will fit on nearly all common cutoff saw fences.
